Helping Children Stay Safe Online This Summer
Hello again, this is “Writings From The Web”!
Summer brings longer days, relaxed routines, and more opportunities for children to connect with friends. It also often means more time spent on phones, tablets, gaming systems, and social media. While technology can help children stay engaged and connected, it is important for parents and caregivers to stay involved in their digital lives.
More screen time can increase exposure to inappropriate content, online bullying, and interactions with people who may not have good intentions. Regular conversations about online safety can help children feel comfortable asking questions and sharing concerns. Talk about protecting personal information, treating others with kindness, and speaking up if something online feels uncomfortable or upsetting.
It is equally important to remember that children need connection with their peers and a sense of community. Online games, group chats, and social platforms often serve as places where friendships grow, especially during the summer months when school is out. Rather than focusing only on limiting screen time, consider helping children build healthy digital habits while encouraging balance with outdoor play, family activities, and face to face experiences.
Parents and caregivers should also remain aware of the signs of online bullying. Changes in mood, withdrawal from favorite activities, reluctance to use devices, or increased anxiety may signal that a child is struggling. Creating a safe and supportive environment where children know they will be heard without fear of judgment can make a meaningful difference.
Summer is an ideal time to strengthen digital safety skills while supporting children's need for friendship and belonging. With open communication, thoughtful guidance, and ongoing involvement, families can help children enjoy the benefits of technology while staying safe, confident, and connected.
